The revival is on its way.

Nice to see folks posting in here. I've seen Brown Baggin throw down. They're cool. Groovement too, yup. Some others, also quite worthy of respect.

I'm seeing more and more folks posting on CL, drummers even, looking to create more funk bands in the Easy Bay these days. I'm kind of excited to see this happening. I hope that some places can be established as beach-heads, regular gigs where musicians will come and network, and built-in crowds that know SOMETHING funky is gonna happen, no matter who hits the stage.

Anybody got any lines on good joints? I don't really dig Jupiter. That place is ok, but it's a dinner crowd, the sound sucks, and the bands can't really lay into it. Downlow? Maybe. Blakes? Ehhh, kinda rugged, and again, bad sound. Eli's? Used to be cool, but kinda small, and not real loud. That could change. Frankly, I'd love to see Eli's blow up. I don't know about too many places in Downtown Oaktown. Thoughts? Ideas?

First of all, thanks for the props.

As far as East Bay Venues goes, the Downlow is really your best bet. The sound is getting better, though still a bit boomy and Daniel and his crew are good peeps. They are doing Funky Fridays and have been really good to us (Brown Baggin).

    Isn't Eli's closing again. I thought I head that.

Blakes is totally worthless, bad sound, drunken fratboys, etc.

We need a good downtown oakland venue. It would be nice if Luka's would step up but they, predictably, seem to be going the DJ route. Van Kleef is too small and the owner (Peter)seems to like west coast cool jazz too much to book funk (nothing wrong with that,BTW), though I applaud the fact that he is making a place for some experimental jazz.

The Black Box is undergoing an ownership change, there is a liquor license notice on the front, we can see what develops there...

I still hold out hope that somebody with vision and cash will reopen the Fox (maybe music venue/speakeasy theatre a la the parkway?)

The Oasis is making a go of it, but they seem to not quite be able to get off the ground as a consitant venue.

All I know is that Downtown Oakland is full of young professionals (largely nonprofit) who would love to have a place to see good live music.

Word. In fact, there are a couple of small squat cafes that folks are starting to run downtown as well. Might be cool to look into that as well as the occasional speak-easy. There are some serious motherfuckers brewin up home brew here that are just off the chain. Thanks for the 411. Let's keep the communication happening. This is how it grows.
