Man, I subbed last weekend with a band from the South Bay
    called the Joint Chiefs.

It wasn't the whole band, the front singer/guitarist and the sax player and then the fantastic bass player with the excellent casuals band, the Garage Band in San Jose was sitting in.

We layed it down thick and as minimal as I"ve ever heard it.
It was fantastic to play with an entire group of truly accomplished players who were secure enough to play really minimalistically.

The Joints Chiefs mainly play casuals and some bar gigs but I was really impressed and hope the drummer gets more high paying
bar mitzvah's or something so that I can sit in.

Damn, after the first set, I took all my toms, my ride cymbal, my splashes and all my specialty cymbals off the kit and played the rest of the evening with a kick, a snare and a hihat and virtually no fills. It was really heaven.

I can dig it. Not so long ago I saw a band at Bruno's (cool little joint in the Mission), and they had a line-up of piano, two basses (one a six-string), Two MCs, and a traps player with just kick hat and snare. Solid, tastey, minimal fills, just the odd flam or hat massage, and it just all flowed real nice. Stinky goodness.

See, I think that's kinda the test. It's like how funky can you make it by NOT playing that note, cuz more than half of the funk is where you don't play. I play a big-ass six-string bass, and I can get all over the thing, but it's soo not about that for playing good funk. It's about slinkin in the few good ones that just push the booty from one side to the other, and then a little bit of this to give it a nice front to back, and then let nature takes it's course as the ladies just feel it, and the fellas follow suit. MMmm hhmmm.

So are the Joint Chiefs playin up in the Easy Bay any time soon? I'm up to hear what folks are doing.

Don't know, oogie but I'll let you know if I hear anything.

It's refreshing to hear a 6 string bass player say what you did. I played a gig the night before with a very accomplished 6 string bass player who was slapping and poppin' 32nd note
triplets in slow blues tunes and Mustang Sally..............I had a really hard time with that one, despite the fact that the guy was a monster.

And speaking of the devil, is anyone else sick of how over saturated the subsonic frequencies are in so many bass players these days. You couldn't hear the friggin pitch of the instrument on this guy's lowest string for the entire evening it was so damned boomy.

I don't know about you, but even though I love rich bass tones, I think the predominance of subwoofers in big house systems has really badly hurt live concert sound.

The last time I saw the Cure at Shoreline, they had the subsonics cranked so hi that Simon Gallup, a fantastic bass player known for his wirey, pick driven melodic bass lines, couldn't even be heard. I was so bummed. Half the reason I went to see the Cure again was to hear Simon play bass in such a distinctive and musical way.

Okay, rant over............note to mixers: not every mix has to have subsonic bass in it and in funk, frequently, you can tighten up the 'punch' quality by elminating it.

that band with two basses and a minimaldrum kit was either, "jungle biscuit" or "mingus amoungus" both formed by master jazz funk bassist miles perkins. the other bassist is the dreaded and awesomely funky troy lampkin.
I played percussion and sang with mingus amougus for three years, before startingmy band Los ANGELITOS.

MINIMALISM IS THE HEART OF FUNK.
